NH Collection Copenhagen first hotel in Denmark to sign green PPA with Better Energy

NH Collection Copenhagen has entered into a power purchase agreement with Better Energy. It will be the first hotel in Denmark to receive electricity from a green power purchase agreement, and thereby adding as much new, green energy to the grid as is consumed.

From the beginning of 2023 guests can check in to the 5-star NH Collection Copenhagen in Copenhagen with an extra clear conscience as the electricity consumption of the hotel will be covered by renewable energy due to a new agreement with the renewable energy company, Better Energy.

NH Collection Copenhagen will purchase 2 GWh (or 2,000,000 kilowatt-hours) per year, corresponding to the hotel's electricity consumption.

"We find that our guests and corporate customers have an increasing desire to travel, live and hold meetings as sustainably as possible. By sourcing additional renewable energy for our 394 rooms and suites, restaurants, meeting and event rooms, we are very pleased to comply with our guests' wishes," says Anders Duelund, General Manager at NH Collection Copenhagen, and adds:

"Green energy is another solution for our hotel, which already has many sustainable building solutions such as recycling concrete, using certified wood in connection with the renovation of the building, rooms that are cooled down using seawater and a green sedum roof that creates biodiversity and sucks rainwater during rains. All together this helps create a sustainable hotel experience for our guests".

The agreement helps Better Energy build a new solar park in Denmark. The solar park will be built in Stevning near Sønderborg and completed this year. With a capacity of 35 GWh, the solar park will supply green energy corresponding to the annual electricity consumption of around 22,500 Danes. The park is established on market terms without subsidies due to ambitious companies such as NH Collection Copenhagen.

"The hotel industry faces the same challenges as many other industries, where green initiatives are an important priority – both for the sake of the climate and to attract climate-conscious guests. A power purchase agreement that contributes actively to the creation of new, green electricity is the most direct way to support the transition to sustainable energy. With the agreement, NH Collection Copenhagen shows green leadership that hopefully can inspire the rest of the hotel industry both at home and abroad," says Peter Munck Søe-Jensen, Executive Vice President of Power Solutions at Better Energy.

Inspired by ATP Real Estate

NH Collection Copenhagen is a customer of ATP Real Estate and rents 33,000 m2 in the building, which opened on September 1st 2021 after a thorough renovation that started in 2017. Their power purchase agreement was signed with inspiration from ATP Real Estate, which announced a similar agreement with 7 GWh from the same solar park in 2021. ATP Real Estate are the first of Denmark's large property owners to enter an agreement that helps build Danish solar power. Peter Hebin Bruun, ATP Real Estate's Head of ESG, is delighted to have been a positive influence:

"We are pleased that NH Hotels is now entering into their own agreement. It sends a strong signal to the entire travel and experience industry when we jointly choose to actively increase the share of renewable energy in the Danish electricity supply."
